‘Visualizing the Invisible: Resonance, Water and Light as Photographic Event’ traces a four decade investigation into photography as physical event rather than descriptive mechanism. Spanning the caustic works of the Vanitas, Glass and Ophelia series through to the recent Cymatic Water + Light body of work, this essay proposes that invisible forces — resonance, pressure, frequency, surface tension — do not require invention. They require conditions through which they become legible. Working exclusively in analogue process, Alexander James Hamilton constructs systems in which frequency, liquid and light are brought into controlled relation. The resulting photographs are not representations of these forces but their material consequence. Authorship, in this context, is not diminished through physical process. It is intensified by it.

After temporary research positions at Queen Mary University of London, Brown University, and University of Warwick she joined the Department of Mathematics University of Surrey as a lecturer in pure mathematics.
Her research covers a broad range of topics in general area of Dynamical Systems. She enjoys bringing together different branches of mathematics such as Number Theory, Fractal Geometry and Analysis, applying methods from one of them to problems in another.

Mitchell Newberry is a Research Assistant Professor of Biology, University of New Mexico. He is a computational biologist and complex systems scientist whose research spans population dynamics, the evolution of language and culture, the maintenance of diversity in ecosystems, and vascular morphology, while contributing to the nuts and bolts of software and statistics. “My primary interests are explaining and describing demographic patterns across the ‘tree of life’. However, my research interests are varied and range from climate change, macroevolution and macroecology, to senescence and population dynamics.
Before my appointment at the University of Southern Denmark I spent a couple of years working on similar things as a research scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock, Germany. In addition, I spent some time working with Dr Jinliang Wang at the Institute of Zoology (London) on population genetics.
My first post-doc, based at Imperial College London, was on the LITS project, a database of UK-based long-term individual-based time series data sets.”

Artist and writer, Richard Bright, has addressed the relationship between art, science and consciousness for over 40 years. He studied Fine Art and Physics before founding The Interalia Centre in 1990. Since then, he has lectured extensively on art and science and written articles on James Turrell, Andy Goldsworthy and Susan Derges, among others. He has exhibited both nationally and internationally and was the recipient of the ‘Visions of Science’ Award, The Edge, Andrew Brownsward Gallery, University of Bath (Second Prize Winner). Co-author of ‘The Art of Science’ (Welbeck Publishers, 2021).

Shanthi Chandrasekar is a multimedia and multidisciplinary artist from Maryland, USA, who has an academic background in physics and psychology, and has been trained in the traditional Indian art forms of Kolam and Tanjore-style painting. While many of her works are influenced by her Indian heritage, her true inspiration comes from the mystery and majesty of the world around her; her muse lives where the scientific overlaps with the spiritual.

Carter Hodgkin fuses art, science and technology to explore a new language of abstraction through paintings, animations and large-scale mosaics. Approaching the modification of code as a drawing tool, she generates atomic particle collisions to create animated forms, which visualize energy. Her working process is an interplay between digital means woven into traditional media with an emphasis on the hand. She utilizes a range of media from animation and programming to drawings, paintings and large-scale mosaics.
