From the mystery and majesty of the universe and beyond
Shanthi Chandrasekar is a multimedia and multidisciplinary artist from Maryland, USA, who has an academic background in physics and psychology, and has been trained in the traditional Indian art forms of Kolam and Tanjore-style painting. While many of her works are influenced by her Indian heritage, her true inspiration comes from the mystery and majesty of the world around her; her muse lives where the scientific overlaps with the spiritual.
I am a daydreamer, and usually my thoughts tend to wander from the workings of our day to day lives, to the extreme scales of the cosmos and the quantum world with me at the threshold. The idea of me gets reduced to my brain cells as I switch gears to contemplate on its quantum beginnings and its effect on the larger universe. These journeys of my mind tend to serve as my muse to create artwork that tries to seek solutions to questions, but invariably results in more questions. I enjoy experimenting with various media to explore abstract concepts from the minutest scales of the subatomic world to the largest structures in the universe and beyond. I like to see parallels between the quantum world, our perceptible world and the cosmos, each being a part of an infinite fractal system.

Singularities & Infinities, Pen on paper, 30”x 22”
A simple idea when repeated can create new images. In this drawing, I traced out circles around a central point with a circular protractor a number of times and this toroidal shape emerged that seemed to resemble a black hole with a central singularity where infinite lines converge.

Inflation- Infinity, Pen on paper, 30”x 22”
Cosmic inflation is a theoretical model explaining the exponential expanse of the universe at its earliest stages, expanding from a point source infinitely long period of time.

Black Hole, Pen & ink on paper, 30” x 22”
In this drawing, I have tried to visualize the warping of spacetime caused by a spinning black hole with stars and galaxies in the background.

Turbulence-2, Pen on paper, 30”x 22”
Turbulence cascade is prevalent at all scales from the micro to the macro universe. The dissipation is highly structured and non-linear, becoming more complex as it couples with other forces to become chaotic.

Deep time, Pen & ink on paper, 30” x 22”
This drawing depicts the evolution of the universe through time, as aggregating dark matter creates a cosmic web where galaxies are born. I wanted to also bring out the effects of dark energy as space expands.

Entropy- Kolam, Pen & ink on paper, 30”x 22”
Using Kolams, a traditional Indian drawing made of dots and lines, I have attempted to visually describe entropy from the beginning of the universe to its future. The highly ordered symmetric patterns in the center disintegrate to chaotic loops and floating dots.

Fabric of My Mind, Pen & ink on paper, 30” x 22”
The ‘Fabric of My Mind’ is an attempt to visualize the intricate, interconnected network of the brain cells through the eyepiece of an imaginary microscope where brain cells are entwined in the many entangled layers of the fabric of the mind and the universe, enabling us to perceive and try to make sense of it all.

Information Paradox – Cosmic Web, Pen & ink on paper, 9”x 9”
Information Paradox- Cosmic Web refers to the distortion of our perception of reality. I have borrowed concepts from neuroscience and cosmology to create a black hole that sucks information received and transmitted by neurons.

Grand Unified Theory- Astrocytes, Pen & ink on paper, 30” x 22”
The Grand Unified Theory attempts to connect relativity with quantum mechanics but still remains a mystery. In this drawing I have drawn a circle of astrocytes, one type of glial cells found in the brain which resembles stars, as the threshold between the outward cosmic and inward quantum realms.

Microglia- Black Hole, Pen & ink on paper, 9” x 9”
Microglia play the role as the immune system of the brain by engulfing and eliminating dead cells and other brain cells. This action of the microglia seemed similar to black holes as they both swallow matter.

Borders & Boundaries, Acrylic on canvas, 36” x 36”
As I layered repetitive wavy and dotted lines in a number of different colors horizontally and vertically, slightly chaotic but interesting map-like shapes emerged. They reminded me of the particle and wave nature of light, leading to the final layer of the same patterns in white dots and lines.

Cosmic Web, Pen & ink on paper, 72” x 45”
Oftentimes patterns repeat themselves at all scales ranging from the quantum to the cosmic realms and everything in between. In this drawing, I have tried to create complex networks of branching fractal shapes to refer to the connections between subatomic particles, neurons in our brains, cities and the cosmic web connecting galaxies.

Proton, Pen & ink on paper, 30” x 22”
The proton is made of smaller particles called quarks that have three types of “color” charges, held together by the strong force carrying particles called gluons. These bonds become stronger when pulled apart and can lead to the formation of new particles, and I have tried to capture the increasing the complexity of the structure.

Entropy -Macrostates & Microstates, Hand hole-punched paper, 6’ x 6’ x 9’
This paper installation is an attempt to capture the meaning of entropy with changing macrostates and microstates depicted by the series of hole punched circles hung from the ceiling. Each system of circles is made from the holes punched out of the largest circle.

Maya, Hand hole-punched paper, mirror sheet and wood, 6’ x 6’ x 4’
Maya means illusion and as I punch one hole at a time, constantly aware of the paper and tools’ physical limitations, images of the Big Bang–black holes with accretion discs and voids in the vast space–begin to emerge. The varying sizes of the holes refer to the scales in the universe, and the layers of paper to different dimensions. The same white paper changes in value as light and shadows dance on its surface reminding us of ephemerality that can span from a billionth of a second to billions of years.
