Cellular Kinesics is an exploration of the communication methods of cells during a spinal cord injury. Heavily influenced by the research data, videos, and imaging of neuroscientist Andrew Greenhalgh, this work is a collaborative effort of science and art.

In this project, the art of hand-lettering is joined with the actions of two phagocytic cells. The goal of illustrative hand-lettering is to have the letter forms express its meaning through visual representation. This goal is translated with Cellular Kinesics by highlighting the key moments of communication between the microglia and macrophages after an injury occurs in the spinal cord. The letters evolve through four major actions:

1) pre-injury

2) first responders (microglia)

3) relieve, second responders (macrophages) and finally

4) necrosis or cellular death (macrophages).

This illustrative hand-lettering takes the dense realities of scientific language and make them accessible for those unfamiliar with the language of cells.
