Exploring Oneness
Sandra Lerner’s work celebrates the creative process of life in a universe that is constantly in flux. She explores the similarities between cosmology and Eastern philosophy, as well as the intersection of art and science.
“My most recent Cosmic paintings interweave the latest theories in astrophysics with the intuitive mysticism of Taoist philosophy, where the universe is seen as an inseparable reality, and in which there is an interrelationship of all things. My exploration of the fabric of the universe, its ever-changing patterns, give rise to and parallels my own creative development. I conceive my art as a spiritual, psychological, and philosophical journey.”

The interrelationship between the oneness in the universe and the multiplicities of our daily life has been at the core of my work and existence since the 1960’s when I became aware of the Taoist philosophy of Oneness.
I seek to explore this oneness that permeates everything in the universe. I feel it when I am experiencing nature, listening to music, and when I am painting and creating. It is truly being in a state of bliss.

As a child, I was exposed to music and trained as a concert pianist. In college I was a philosophy major. I first started to paint when I was a young woman. I loved working with color and texture. The similarities between painting and music such as color, rhythm, tempo and shape resonated with me,
I studied calligraphy with a master calligrapher on my first trip to Japan in 1981. My solo exhibition with Betty Parsons Gallery in 1982, which was called the “Inland Sea series “, was inspired by calligraphy and the Japanese landscape. I love the movement and mystery of the calligraphic stroke. It represents to me the morphic resonances and echoes of other cultures and civilizations that exist in the universe.

When I start my paintings, I pour the paint in layers. I incorporate calligraphy as well. When the paint dries, I look for shapes to develop, bearing in mind the composition of color, shape and design . I usually suggest. I want the viewer to “finish the story”.

The Taoist philosophy of oneness and the similarities that it has to quantum physics resonates with me. Whether it is the multiverse, string theory, entanglement, consciousness, etc, I have loved exploring the different theories and how they relate to my paintings. The innate intelligence of all species fascinates me as well.
My most recent work has been the exploration of entanglement. I am painting the energy and communication that occur between two particles or entities. Once they have interacted, they are entangled, even though they might be separated by millions of miles. This can happen at a cellular, subatomic level, or as a cosmic event . Many esteemed physicists theorize that it is entanglement that keeps space/time together.

My recent exhibitions at the June Kelly Gallery have explored the cosmic sublime and the way it relates to the energy of Entanglement.

PANEL DISCUSSION, “COSMIC AESTHETICS: SANDRA LERNER’S PAINTINGS”, WITH DONALD KUSPIT AND JENO SOKOLOSKI
Moderated by Donald Kuspit, art historian, with Jeno Sokoloski, astrophysicist, Columbia University, and Sandra Lerner, painter, at the June Kelly Gallery, SoHo, NY, October 26, 2019
I am interested in exploring as well as how consciousness relates to the oneness in the universe, a universe that we are a part of and is within us as well. My paintings strive to heighten our awareness of our oneness with the universe.
