Prof. Richard Feynman describes the movement of atoms in a fantastically simple way. He explains a bouncing ball with such enthusiasm and excitement as a lesson that science is about the joy of imagining things. Feynman has been credited with pioneering the field of quantum computing and introducing the concept of nanotechnology. During his lifetime, Feynman became one of the best-known scientists in the world. In a 1999 poll of 130 leading physicists worldwide by the British journal Physics World he was ranked as one of the ten greatest physicists of all time.

“Aesthetic, emotional, and empathetic selection are applied to a derivative of Karl Sims’ Evolved Virtual Creatures. The resulting Creatures can be beautiful or strange, and provoke strong reactions in human observers. It may be possible to evolve virtual pets to which humans can form strong emotional bonds.” From 1990 to 2001, Thomas Ray conducted research on digital evolution, which means exploring what happens when evolution by natural selection is embedded in the medium of digital computation. This work began with the creation of ‘Tierra’, a system in which self-replicating machine code programs evolved by natural selection. In 2000, he implemented a new system called ‘Virtual Life’. In 2014, his ‘Aesthetically Evolved Virtual Pets’ video was runner-up in the Virtual Creatures competition at GECCO.
Tor-Finn Malum Fitje is a Norwegian artist based in Stockholm, Sweden. His projects are typically manifested through narratives in video and sound, although textual production is likewise an evident aspect of this process. His activity borders scientific research, a position strongly reflected in the finished artworks. Questions regarding the nature of sensory and linguistic reproductions, of metaphors and cognition, of myth and physical theory, and of poetry and the natural sciences, are reoccurring subjects of interest.
In this interactive, participatory artwork the Brainwaves of participants are monitored whilst experiencing a Dream Machine, invoking the phenomena Flicker via neurofeedback. Emergent sonic guides and voices recede, new ideas come to the fore. The resulting Hypnagogic & Hypnopompic brainwaves are fed-back to the participant, and change the sonification. In a secluded space, eyes closed, reclined in an air-pumped Dentist chair, they float back down, where time disappeared – experiencing Reverie, increased Theta waves. Feedback has shown increased relaxation, refreshed creativity and non linear thinking.
