Co-Genesis: New Sea Morphologies are oil paintings of AI-generated images of sea creatures. Merging new emergent technology with old master painting techniques, these works examine the future of human creation and the natural world.

The source images were generated using ML Runway and StyleGAN, AI algorithms that run on general adversarial networks and was fed thousands of images of aquatic life forms. Creatures containing human-like anatomical references, and distinct characters emerged from these images. The futuristic forms question the result of human-induced changes in the environment and the increasingly common practice of genome editing.

These paintings are an investigation of these contemporary quandaries. I approach imaging these alien creatures like an early life-science illustrator. The collaboration between my human painterly hand and the AI is a robust place from which to investigate human[1]induced environmental manipulations.

*The AI-generated reference material for this series of paintings was created by the Beyond Earth Art collective artists; Yoko Shimuzi, Richelle Gribble and Elena Soterakis, as part of the internal organ design of their “Living Light” aerospace sculpture at the Kennedy Space Center.
