Connecting Rhythms
Issue 16 September 2015

Infinite Connections
Working intuitively, artist and ceramicist, Clare Crouchman, explores the underlying connections and systems that reflect notions in quantum physics and the idea of unity. The resulting patterns or rhythms of lines are interrelating but there is not necessarily a sequence of events, more an underlying network of integration.

Hyperrhythmia
This is the story of M, a man suffering from obscure symptoms best approximated by the description of a sensation of ‘hearing without ears’, the ability of a body to process viscerally and register immediately sonic potential that are consciously inaccessible to it.

Rhythmic ‘States of Mind’
Artist, Karen Margolis, devises architectural renderings of the mind’s operations by plotting dots and burning holes in paper. Having studied cognitive psychology, she has developed a system to translate her inner thoughts and feelings into molecular patterns and rhythms, maps that chronicle the chemistry of her “states of mind”.

The Drama of Forms
Artist, Steven Gawoski, reveals the drama and rhythms of the infinitesimal. Using a lexicon of images derived from scanning electron micrography, fossils and insect morphology, he creates a personal narrative through graphite and monochrome colored pencil drawings.

The Euclidean Algorithm Generates Traditional Musical Rhythms
What do African rhythms, spallation neutron source accelerators in nuclear physics, string theory in computer science, and an ancient algorithm described by Euclid have in common? Godfried Toussaint, Professor of Computer Science and the Head of the Computer Science Program at New York University Abu Dhabi, reveals the answer.

The Rhythmic Sound of Living Cells (blog link)
What does the sound of living cells sound like? This blog explores the discovery of cellular sounds through the science nano-biotechnology and how it is being utilized in art.
